In Invisible Monsters, a character named Brandy, also referred to as Queen Supreme, will alter the narrator’s life, both past, present and future, as they go on a path to exact revenge on the people who have wronged the narrator. I didn’t think a book about a disfigured woman incapable of speech would ever resonate with me. I was perched against the radiator with the book held so close to my eyes (I soon realised I’d need glasses), and once I was finished, I held it tightly against my chest. I read this book in about four hours and it was physically impossible for me to but the book down. A freak accident caused her to lose her speech due to her jaw being ripped off. Shane on the other hand is gay and feels immense pressure trying to live up to expectations of their parents impose on him because of his gender. The empty houses are also the author’s open criticism and in-novel representation of the “American Dream:” an empty, futile pursuit where a person strives hard to find himself/herself in a job they don’t like to buy a house and a lifestyle they can’t afford with money they don’t have to please people they don’t like.įreedom is a central theme in the novel how do the characters Shannon and Shane achieve freedom?īoth characters feel trapped in a condition they were born in: Shannon was born beautiful and as a fashion model she felt that people only valued her for her beauty and how they could leverage that beauty.
